How to Tell if Opal Is Real
How to tell if opal is real becomes especially important once you understand just how diverse this gemstone can be. Natural opal may be white, black, transparent, orange, attached to its host rock, filled with brilliant play-of-color, or show no play-of-color at all. That variety can make identification confusing, particularly when synthetic opal, imitation materials, doublets, triplets, and treated stones are also available.
In Parts 1 and 2 of our Opal Learning Series, we explored what opal is and examined the differences between black, white, boulder, crystal, fire, Australian, and Ethiopian opal. In this final part, we'll focus on authenticity and the terminology buyers should understand before purchasing opal.
The most important lesson is that "real" is not always a precise enough description. A better question is whether an opal is natural, laboratory-created, treated, assembled, or an imitation.
Natural Opal vs. Synthetic Opal
Natural opal forms through geological processes without human manufacture. Its silica structure, body color, transparency, inclusions, and play-of-color develop naturally.
Synthetic opal, sometimes called laboratory-created opal, is manufactured to reproduce characteristics of natural opal. A synthetic opal can have essentially the same type of composition and optical phenomenon associated with its natural counterpart while being created in a controlled environment rather than mined from the Earth.
That makes synthetic opal different from an imitation.
An imitation opal only resembles opal visually. Glass, plastic, resin, or other materials can be manufactured to reproduce an opal-like appearance without possessing the same fundamental material characteristics.
For buyers, these distinctions matter because natural, synthetic, and imitation materials should be represented accurately.
Can You Identify Natural Opal by Looking at It?
Sometimes visual examination provides useful clues, but appearance alone cannot reliably identify every opal.
Natural precious opal frequently shows irregularity in its play-of-color. Patterns, flashes, body color, transparency, and internal characteristics may change as the stone is rotated under light.
Synthetic material can sometimes display patterns that appear unusually regular or repetitive. Certain laboratory-created opals may show distinctive structures under magnification that an experienced gemologist can recognize.
However, modern synthetic materials can be convincing. A photograph—especially an online product photograph—is rarely sufficient for definitive identification.
When authenticity significantly affects the value of a stone, professional gemological examination is the safer approach.
What Is an Opal Doublet?
An opal doublet is an assembled gemstone constructed from two layers.
A relatively thin piece of precious opal is attached to a darker backing material. The dark background can improve contrast and make the opal's play-of-color appear stronger.
The upper opal layer may be genuine natural opal, so calling the entire piece simply "fake opal" would be inaccurate. The important distinction is that it is an assembled opal, rather than a single solid piece of natural opal.
Looking at the side of an unset stone under magnification may reveal the boundary between the opal layer and its backing.
Proper disclosure is important because a doublet should not be represented as solid opal.
What Is an Opal Triplet?
An opal triplet adds another layer.
Typically, it consists of a dark backing, a thin layer of precious opal, and a transparent protective cap over the top. The upper layer may be made from materials such as quartz, glass, or another transparent substance.
The transparent dome can protect the thin opal layer while also affecting its apparent size and appearance.
Like doublets, triplets can create attractive and affordable jewelry. The issue is not whether they should exist; it is whether the construction is clearly disclosed to the buyer.
A solid natural opal, an opal doublet, and an opal triplet are three very different products and should be described accordingly.
Natural Boulder Opal Is Not a Doublet
This distinction causes considerable confusion.
As we discussed in Part 2, boulder opal naturally occurs in association with its host rock, commonly ironstone. During cutting, some of that natural host material may intentionally remain attached.
From the side, the combination of opal and dark host rock can sometimes remind an inexperienced buyer of an assembled doublet.
The difference is fundamental.
In boulder opal, the opal and host rock occur together naturally.
In an opal doublet, separate materials have been intentionally bonded together.
Understanding this distinction can prevent a beautiful natural boulder opal from being incorrectly dismissed as an assembled stone.
Are Opals Ever Treated?
Yes. Some opals undergo treatments intended to modify their appearance.
Treatments can include processes that darken the body color and increase the apparent contrast of play-of-color. Other methods may involve impregnation, coating, dyeing, or additional enhancement techniques depending on the material.
Treatment does not automatically make a gemstone undesirable, but it can affect identification, value, durability, and care requirements.
For that reason, significant treatments should be disclosed when selling an opal.
Buyers should pay particular attention when an opal displays an unusually dark body color or exceptionally strong contrast at a price that seems inconsistent with comparable untreated material. That alone does not prove treatment, but it can justify asking additional questions.
Be Careful with "At-Home Opal Tests"
Online advice often recommends scratching, heating, soaking, or otherwise experimenting with gemstones to determine whether they are genuine.
These tests can be unreliable and may permanently damage the stone.
Opal measures approximately 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and can be more sensitive than many common jewelry gemstones. Hydrophane opals may also absorb liquids, making soaking-based tests particularly inappropriate as a general identification method.
A buyer should not have to damage a gemstone to determine what it is.
Visual inspection and magnification can provide clues, but important stones should be examined using appropriate gemological methods.
How Gemologists Examine Opal
Professional identification begins by considering the stone as a complete specimen rather than relying on a single visual characteristic.
A gemologist may examine body color, transparency, play-of-color, surface characteristics, internal structure, inclusions, and pattern under magnification. The stone can also be examined for evidence of assembled construction or treatment.
Depending on the specimen, additional gemological or laboratory testing may be necessary.
This is particularly important for valuable opals because determining that something is "opal" is only part of the question. Establishing whether it is natural or synthetic, solid or assembled, and treated or untreated can be equally important.
What Should You Ask Before Buying Opal?
Before purchasing an important opal, ask for a clear description of what is being offered.
Is the stone natural or laboratory-created?
Is it solid opal, a doublet, or a triplet?
Has a treatment been disclosed?
What type of opal is it?
Is its geographic origin known, or is the origin simply being assumed from its appearance?
For expensive or collector-quality material, independent gemological documentation may provide additional confidence.
A reputable seller should be comfortable distinguishing known facts from assumptions and explaining the material accurately.
Understanding Opal Is Better Than Looking for a Single "Real or Fake" Test
There is no universal visual trick that can reliably separate every natural opal from every synthetic, imitation, treated, or assembled material.
Learning the terminology is far more useful.
A natural solid opal is different from a synthetic opal. A synthetic opal is different from an imitation. A doublet or triplet may contain genuine opal but is an assembled product. Boulder opal may naturally retain its host rock without being assembled at all.
Once these distinctions are understood, buying opal becomes considerably less confusing.
