How to Tell if Ruby Is Real
How to tell if ruby is real is not as simple as checking whether a red gemstone looks natural. Ruby can be natural, laboratory-grown, treated, fracture-filled, or imitated by another material, and some of these categories can look remarkably similar without proper gemological examination.
In Parts 1 and 2 of our Ruby Learning Series, we explored what ruby is, how red corundum forms, the different colors and types of ruby, star ruby, geographic origins, and terminology such as Burmese ruby and pigeon's blood. The final part addresses the question that matters most when you're actually buying one: what exactly is the ruby being offered?
A better question than simply "Is this ruby real?" is: Is it natural or laboratory-grown, what treatments has it received, and is the material actually ruby?
Natural Ruby vs. Laboratory-Grown Ruby
Natural ruby is red corundum that formed through geological processes within the Earth.
Laboratory-grown ruby—also called synthetic or lab-created ruby—is corundum produced under controlled conditions. It can have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and many of the same physical and optical properties as natural ruby.
That makes laboratory-grown ruby very different from an imitation.
An imitation ruby only resembles ruby visually. Red glass or another red gemstone, for example, may imitate ruby without actually being corundum.
So calling every laboratory-grown ruby "fake" is technically misleading. It is ruby material, but it is not natural ruby, and it should always be represented accordingly.
Can You Tell a Natural Ruby by Looking at It?
Sometimes a ruby provides visible clues, but appearance alone is not enough for reliable identification.
Natural ruby may contain mineral crystals, fine rutile needles, healed fractures, color zoning, growth structures, and other inclusions created during its geological formation.
These characteristics can become extremely useful under magnification.
However, a natural ruby does not have to look heavily included. Fine natural stones can be relatively clean, while laboratory-grown rubies can contain inclusions and growth features of their own.
This is why the popular idea that "perfect means fake" is unreliable.
An exceptionally clean ruby deserves careful examination, particularly if it is large and inexpensive, but clarity alone cannot establish origin.
Natural Inclusions Can Tell a Story
Inclusions are one of the most valuable tools available to gemologists examining ruby.
Fine rutile needles, commonly called silk, may occur within natural corundum. Other inclusions can include crystals, fingerprints or healed fractures, growth zoning, and cavities.
The condition of these inclusions can sometimes provide evidence of treatment as well.
For example, heating can alter or partially dissolve rutile silk and change other internal characteristics. An experienced gemologist examining these features under magnification may therefore learn not only whether a ruby appears natural but also whether it shows evidence of heat treatment.
This is one reason inclusions should not automatically be viewed as flaws. They can preserve information about a gemstone's formation and later history.
Is a Heat-Treated Ruby Still Real?
Yes—with an important distinction.
A ruby that formed naturally and was later conventionally heated is still a natural ruby.
Heat treatment is commonly used to improve the color or clarity of ruby and has a long history within the gemstone trade. Treatment should nevertheless be disclosed because it can influence rarity and value.
Fine natural rubies showing no evidence of heat treatment can command substantial premiums compared with otherwise similar heated stones.
So when a seller says a ruby is natural, there is still another useful question to ask:
Has it been treated?
Natural origin and treatment status describe two different things.
What Is Glass-Filled Ruby?
This is one of the most important distinctions for ruby buyers.
Some low-quality ruby material contains extensive fractures. These fractures can be filled with glass—often lead-containing glass—to improve apparent transparency and overall appearance.
The result may look dramatically clearer than the original material.
Such products contain natural corundum, but their appearance has been significantly altered through treatment. They should not be represented in the same way as untreated or conventionally heated natural ruby.
Glass-filled ruby can also require considerably more careful handling. Heat, chemicals, jewelry repair procedures, and certain cleaning methods may damage or alter the filling.
Treatment disclosure therefore affects more than price. It tells the owner how the gemstone should be cared for.
Other Ruby Treatments
Ruby can receive other treatments as well.
In addition to conventional heating and fracture filling, treatments may involve diffusion or other processes intended to modify color or appearance.
Different treatments have different levels of permanence, acceptance within the gemstone trade, effects on value, and care requirements.
This is why two rubies that appear similar in a photograph can have dramatically different market values.
One may be an untreated natural ruby.
Another may be a natural ruby improved by conventional heating.
A third may consist of heavily fractured corundum whose apparent transparency has been substantially improved with glass filling.
They should not be evaluated as equivalent materials.
What Materials Can Imitate Ruby?
Ruby's recognizable red color has been imitated for centuries.
Red glass is one of the simplest possibilities, but other natural gemstones can also be mistaken for ruby.
Red spinel, for example, can look remarkably similar to ruby. Historically, some famous red gemstones once believed to be rubies were eventually identified as spinel.
Red garnets can also resemble certain ruby colors, while other natural and manufactured materials may be used as substitutes.
This does not make spinel or garnet inferior gemstones—they are simply different materials.
Color alone cannot identify a ruby.
Gemologists instead examine properties that distinguish corundum from glass, spinel, garnet, and other possible look-alikes.
Be Careful with At-Home Ruby Tests
The internet is full of supposed methods for testing ruby at home.
Scratch the stone. Shine a flashlight through it. Rub it against something. Look for bubbles. See whether the color changes. Decide whether it feels cold.
None of these should be treated as a universal ruby test.
A scratch test is particularly unhelpful. Both natural and laboratory-grown ruby are corundum and rank 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, so hardness cannot tell you whether a ruby formed naturally or in a laboratory.
You also risk damaging the jewelry, another gemstone, or the surface being scratched.
Bubbles can sometimes provide useful information under professional examination, but simply seeing something bubble-like does not automatically establish that a gemstone is glass.
Identification requires context.
How Do Gemologists Identify Natural Ruby?
Professional ruby identification involves combining multiple observations rather than searching for one definitive visual trick.
Magnification can reveal inclusions and growth features associated with natural or laboratory-grown corundum. Gemologists may examine color zoning, fluorescence, internal fractures, surface features, and evidence of treatment.
Standard gemological instruments can also measure optical and physical properties to determine whether the gemstone is actually corundum.
Separating natural from laboratory-grown ruby, identifying certain treatments, or determining geographic origin can require more advanced laboratory techniques.
For an inexpensive bead or small piece of jewelry, that level of analysis may not always be practical. For a significant ruby whose natural origin, treatment status, or geographic origin substantially affects its price, an independent laboratory report becomes much more valuable.
What Should You Ask Before Buying Ruby?
Instead of asking only whether a ruby is "real," ask questions that produce useful answers.
Is the ruby natural or laboratory-grown?
Has it been heated?
Has it been fracture-filled or glass-filled?
Has it received any other treatment?
If a geographic origin is claimed, how was that origin determined?
For a valuable stone, is there an independent gemological laboratory report?
Clear disclosure is especially important when terms such as unheated, Burmese, Mozambique, pigeon's blood, natural, or similar descriptions are being used to justify a higher price.
A seller should be able to distinguish established information from assumptions or marketing terminology.
What About Ruby Gemstone Beads?
Ruby beads deserve a little additional context because their appearance can be very different from fine faceted ruby used as the center stone of a ring.
Natural ruby suitable for beads may be translucent or opaque and contain significant inclusions, color variations, or associated mineral material. It can be polished or faceted into rounds, rondelles, ovals, and other bead shapes.
That appearance does not make the ruby fake.
At the same time, bead buyers should pay particular attention to treatments. Dyed, filled, composite, laboratory-grown, and imitation materials can all appear in the marketplace.
An inexpensive strand of perfectly transparent, intensely red "natural ruby" should therefore invite questions rather than assumptions.
Price alone cannot identify a gemstone, but the description, apparent quality, and price should make reasonable sense together.
"Real Ruby" Is Only the Beginning
The biggest lesson from our three-part Ruby Learning Series is that real is not a sufficiently precise gemological description.
Natural ruby formed within the Earth.
Laboratory-grown ruby is manufactured corundum with many of the fundamental properties of ruby but a different origin.
A heated ruby can still be natural.
A glass-filled ruby may contain natural corundum while having an appearance significantly altered by treatment.
And an imitation may contain no ruby at all.
Once you understand those distinctions, buying ruby becomes much less about finding a magical "real or fake" test and much more about asking the right questions.
