Types of Opal: What Makes Each Variety Different?

Types of opal can look so different that someone seeing them for the first time might assume they are completely different gemstones. A black opal with brilliant red and green flashes can appear worlds apart from a transparent crystal opal or a warm orange fire opal, yet all belong to the remarkably diverse opal family.

In Part 1 of our Opal Learning Series, we explored how opal forms, why precious opal produces play-of-color, and the important difference between precious and common opal. Now we can go one step further: understanding the names used to describe the major varieties of opal.

Terms such as black opal, white opal, crystal opal, boulder opal, and fire opal do not all describe exactly the same characteristic. Some refer primarily to body color or transparency, while others relate to how the opal occurs naturally. Understanding those differences makes comparing opals much easier.

White and Light Opal

White opal is one of the most recognizable varieties. It has a white to light body color and may display play-of-color across its surface.

Against a pale background, flashes of green, blue, orange, yellow, or red can create a softer appearance than the strong contrast often seen in dark opal. Some specimens show subtle scattered colors, while others produce bright flashes across much of the stone.

White and light opals have historically been strongly associated with Australian deposits, particularly areas such as Coober Pedy.

Not every white-colored opal displays play-of-color, however. A light body color by itself does not automatically make an opal precious. As we established in Part 1, the presence of play-of-color is what distinguishes precious opal from common opal.

What Is Black Opal?

The term black opal refers to opal with a dark body tone rather than an opal that is necessarily completely black.

The background may appear black, dark gray, bluish gray, brownish, or another sufficiently dark tone. When bright play-of-color appears against that darker background, the contrast can make the spectral colors look exceptionally vivid.

Australia's Lightning Ridge is particularly famous for producing black opal.

Fine specimens can display intense combinations of red, orange, green, blue, and violet. Red play-of-color is particularly sought after when it appears strongly and attractively, although an opal's quality cannot be judged from a single color alone.

Brightness, pattern, body tone, color distribution, condition, size, and overall appearance all contribute to evaluating an individual stone.

Boulder Opal: When the Host Rock Becomes Part of the Gem

Boulder opal has a completely different character.

Rather than removing all surrounding rock during cutting, boulder opal is generally fashioned with some of its natural host rock—often ironstone—remaining attached to the opal.

Thin seams and patches of precious opal can run through the darker host material, creating dramatic natural patterns. Because the opal and host rock formed together, cutters often follow these irregular seams instead of forcing the material into conventional symmetrical shapes.

The result can be remarkably individual.

Australia, particularly Queensland, is famous for boulder opal deposits. In jewelry, the contrast between dark ironstone and vivid play-of-color can make even relatively thin seams of opal visually striking.

Boulder opal should not be confused with an opal doublet, where separate materials have been intentionally joined together. In natural boulder opal, the opal and its host rock occur together naturally.

What Is Crystal Opal?

Despite its name, crystal opal is not crystalline in the same sense as quartz or sapphire.

The word crystal in this context describes the opal's transparency.

Crystal opal is transparent to semi-transparent precious opal with visible play-of-color. Because light can enter the material more deeply, flashes of color may appear suspended within the stone rather than simply sitting across its surface.

Crystal opal can occur with different underlying body tones, which means the term describes transparency rather than one specific color.

This is an excellent example of why opal terminology can initially seem confusing: black opal describes body tone, while crystal opal primarily describes transparency.

Fire Opal Is About Body Color

Fire opal introduces another important distinction.

The term generally refers to opal with a yellow, orange, or red body color—the warm shades associated with fire. Mexico is particularly famous for producing this material.

Some fire opal displays play-of-color, but some does not.

That point is important because people sometimes assume that "fire" refers to rainbow flashes. In this case, the name primarily describes the gemstone's warm body color rather than the optical phenomenon of play-of-color.

Transparent examples may even be faceted rather than cut into the domed cabochons commonly associated with precious opal. This gives some fire opal jewelry an appearance quite different from traditional white or black opal.

What About Ethiopian Opal?

Ethiopian opal is a geographic description rather than a separate mineral species.

Ethiopia has become an important source of precious opal, particularly material from the Wollo region. Many Ethiopian opals display vivid play-of-color and can range from transparent to translucent.

An especially important characteristic of much Ethiopian material is hydrophane behaviour.

Hydrophane opal has a porous structure capable of absorbing water. When immersed or exposed to significant moisture, its transparency and appearance may temporarily change. After drying thoroughly, the stone may gradually return toward its previous appearance.

This characteristic is one reason proper care and accurate identification matter when buying opal.

Australian and Ethiopian opals should not simply be judged as one being universally "better" than the other. Individual quality, stability, appearance, treatment status, and intended use matter considerably more than a simple country comparison.

Natural Opal Can Fit More Than One Description

One of the easiest mistakes to make when learning opal terminology is assuming every stone belongs neatly to one exclusive category.

It does not always work that way.

An opal can be described according to several characteristics, including its body tone, transparency, geographical origin, host material, and whether it displays play-of-color.

This is why understanding the terminology is more useful than simply memorizing a list of names.

When examining an opal, ask:

What is its body tone? Is it transparent, translucent, or opaque? Does it display play-of-color? Is host rock naturally attached? Where did it originate? Has it been treated or assembled?

Those questions provide considerably more information than the word "opal" alone.

Which Type of Opal Is Best?

There is no single type of opal that is automatically best for every collector or jewelry design.

Someone looking for dramatic color contrast may prefer black opal. A collector who enjoys natural host-rock patterns may be drawn toward boulder opal. Crystal opal appeals to those who appreciate transparency and internal flashes, while fire opal offers warm yellow, orange, and red body colors rarely associated with other varieties.

White opal remains a classic choice, particularly for jewelry that calls for a lighter and softer appearance.

Rather than choosing based only on a variety name, examine the individual stone: its brightness, pattern, color, transparency, cut, condition, stability, and overall visual character.

Understanding these differences also prepares us for the most practical question in the entire series.
