Types of Ruby: Understanding Color, Origin and Ruby Varieties
Types of ruby can look remarkably different even though they all belong to the same mineral family. One natural ruby may be a vivid, saturated red, another may lean toward purple or pink, and an included cabochon may reveal a distinct star when moved beneath a light. Geographic origin, trace-element chemistry, inclusions, transparency, treatments, and cutting can all contribute to these differences.
In Part 1 of our Ruby Learning Series, we explored what ruby is, how this red variety of corundum forms, why chromium produces its characteristic color, and why ruby ranks among the most durable gemstones used in jewelry. Now we'll look more closely at the terminology buyers encounter when comparing different rubies.
Unlike terms such as "emerald cut" or "round brilliant," many ruby names don't describe a specific cut or separate mineral variety. Some describe color, others refer to geographic origin, and others identify an optical phenomenon or commercial quality. Understanding the difference is essential when evaluating ruby.
Ruby Color: More Than Simply Red
Red is ruby's defining characteristic, but natural ruby does not occur in only one shade.
Depending on the individual stone, ruby may appear vivid red, deep red, slightly purplish-red, orangy-red, or pinkish-red. Tone and saturation also vary considerably.
In gemology, hue describes the basic color and any secondary color influence. Tone describes how light or dark the gemstone appears, while saturation refers to the strength or intensity of its color.
These characteristics work together.
A very dark ruby may possess strong red saturation but appear less lively because little light returns from the stone. A lighter stone may appear bright but approach the visual boundary between ruby and pink sapphire.
For this reason, evaluating ruby color requires more than simply choosing the darkest or brightest red.
Ruby vs. Pink Sapphire
One of the most interesting questions surrounding ruby is where ruby ends and pink sapphire begins.
Both are corundum.
The distinction is based on color rather than mineral species. Gem-quality corundum with sufficiently dominant red color is classified as ruby, while material perceived as predominantly pink is generally called pink sapphire.
The boundary is not always visually obvious, particularly with lighter pinkish-red stones. Trade conventions and laboratory terminology can also play a role in borderline cases.
This is why color descriptions should be considered alongside proper gemological identification rather than relying exclusively on a product photograph.
What Is Pigeon's Blood Ruby?
"Pigeon's blood" is one of the most famous—and frequently overused—terms in the ruby market.
Traditionally, it describes a highly desirable vivid red ruby color. Certain gemological laboratories apply the term only when a ruby falls within specific color parameters and meets their individual criteria.
The phrase should therefore not be used casually as a synonym for "nice red ruby."
A genuine high-quality ruby does not need the pigeon's-blood designation to be beautiful or valuable, and a seller simply using the phrase does not establish that a stone meets laboratory standards for the term.
For important rubies, documentation from a recognized gemological laboratory carries much more weight than marketing terminology.
What Is a Star Ruby?
Not all valuable rubies are transparent faceted stones.
Some contain oriented microscopic inclusions—often fine rutile needles—that interact with light to produce a phenomenon called asterism.
When suitable material is cut into a domed cabochon, reflected light can form a star across the gemstone's surface. These stones are known as star rubies.
Six-rayed stars are especially familiar. As the light source or gemstone moves, a well-defined star appears to travel across the curved surface.
The quality of a star ruby depends on more than the presence of the star itself. Body color, transparency, sharpness and position of the star, surface quality, proportions, and overall appearance all contribute to the desirability of the stone.
Star ruby also demonstrates an important gemological lesson: inclusions are not always undesirable. In this case, inclusions are responsible for the gemstone's defining optical effect.
Burmese Ruby
Rubies from Myanmar, historically known as Burma, have played an important role in the gemstone trade for centuries.
The Mogok region is particularly famous for producing exceptional ruby. Some Burmese rubies are admired for vivid red color and strong fluorescence associated with chromium.
However, Burmese ruby is an origin description—not a color grade.
Not every ruby from Myanmar possesses exceptional color, and an attractive red ruby from another country does not become Burmese simply because its appearance resembles material historically associated with Myanmar.
Geographic origin can influence value in certain high-quality stones, which makes accurate identification particularly important.
A claim of Burmese origin should therefore be supported appropriately when it is being used to justify a significant price premium.
Mozambique Ruby
Mozambique has become one of the world's major modern sources of ruby.
Material from Mozambique spans a wide range of qualities, from heavily included stones suitable for beads and cabochons to fine transparent material used in high-end faceted jewelry.
Colors can range from pinkish and purplish reds to strongly saturated red.
The rise of Mozambique as an important source also demonstrates why ruby quality should never be judged from country name alone. Exceptional and commercial-grade material can occur within the same broad geographic source.
Origin tells part of a gemstone's story; it does not replace an evaluation of the individual ruby.
Rubies from Other Important Sources
Natural ruby occurs in several additional regions.
Sri Lanka has produced ruby and pink sapphire, often including material with relatively lighter tones.
Thailand and Cambodia are historically significant ruby-producing areas. Some material from these regions can have deeper or darker red appearances associated with its trace-element chemistry.
Ruby deposits are also known from Vietnam, Madagascar, Tanzania, Afghanistan, and other locations.
These sources demonstrate just how geographically diverse ruby can be.
While experienced gemologists may observe characteristics that suggest a possible source, geographic origin should not be determined solely from visual appearance.
Transparent, Translucent and Opaque Ruby
Ruby doesn't have to be transparent to be genuine.
Fine transparent ruby is highly prized for faceted jewelry because light can travel through the stone and interact with its color and cut. But natural ruby can also be translucent or heavily included.
More included material is frequently fashioned into cabochons, carvings, and gemstone beads rather than traditional faceted center stones.
This is particularly relevant when shopping for ruby beads. A strand of natural ruby beads should not be expected to resemble a collection of fine transparent faceted rubies suitable for expensive rings.
Different qualities of the same gemstone are selected for different lapidary purposes.
Opacity by itself therefore tells you very little about whether ruby is natural.
Does Geographic Origin Determine Ruby Quality?
No.
Certain origins have famous reputations, but country of origin alone cannot establish the quality of an individual ruby.
A fine Mozambique ruby may be far more desirable than a poor-quality ruby from Myanmar. Likewise, two rubies from the same mine can differ substantially in color, transparency, inclusions, size, cut, and treatment status.
When comparing rubies, examine the individual gemstone first.
Important factors include:
Color — Is the red attractive and well saturated?
Transparency — How does light travel through the stone?
Inclusions — Do they affect appearance or durability?
Cut — Does the shape display the color effectively?
Treatment — Has the ruby been heated, filled, diffused, or otherwise enhanced?
Size — Fine ruby becomes increasingly rare in larger sizes.
Origin can then provide additional context rather than replacing these fundamental quality considerations.
Treatments Can Change How Ruby Looks
There is another reason two rubies with similar colors can have dramatically different prices: treatment.
Conventional heat treatment is commonly encountered in natural ruby and may improve color or clarity.
Other material can be fracture-filled, including ruby treated with lead-containing glass or other filling substances to make heavily fractured material appear more transparent.
These are not equivalent treatments.
An untreated fine natural ruby, a conventionally heated ruby, and heavily glass-filled ruby can differ enormously in rarity, durability, care requirements, and market value even if they appear somewhat similar in an online photograph.
That distinction is important enough that it deserves an article of its own.
Understanding Ruby Names Before Buying
Ruby terminology becomes much easier once you separate the different things a name might describe.
Ruby identifies red gem-quality corundum.
Star ruby describes ruby displaying asterism.
Burmese ruby and Mozambique ruby describe geographic origin.
Pigeon's blood refers to a highly specific desirable color designation when used according to established criteria.
Heated, glass-filled, and other treatment terminology describe what happened to the gemstone after it formed.
These terms should never be treated as interchangeable indicators of quality.
A ruby is best understood by looking at the complete picture: its identity, color, transparency, inclusions, cut, treatment status, size, and—when reliably determined—origin.
And that leads us directly to the final and most buyer-focused part of this series.
