What Is Obsidian?
What is obsidian? Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that forms when silica-rich molten rock cools so rapidly that crystals do not have enough time to develop. The result is a smooth, glass-like material known for its distinctive luster, sharp fractures, and often dramatic dark appearance.
Although black obsidian is by far the most familiar variety, natural obsidian is more diverse than its name might suggest. Depending on its composition and internal structures, it can display brown tones, golden or silvery sheen, scattered pale inclusions, and other distinctive visual effects.
Obsidian has also been used by humans for thousands of years. Long before it became popular in gemstone beads and jewelry, its ability to break into exceptionally sharp edges made it an important material for cutting tools and other objects. Today, it remains equally fascinating to geologists, collectors, lapidaries, and jewelry makers.
How Does Obsidian Form?
Obsidian begins with volcanic activity.
When certain types of lava containing relatively high amounts of silica reach or approach the Earth's surface, they can cool very quickly. Under the right conditions, this rapid cooling prevents atoms within the molten material from organizing into the orderly crystal structures found in crystalline minerals.
Instead, the material solidifies as glass.
This is why obsidian is often described as volcanic glass rather than a conventional mineral. Like opal, obsidian does not possess the regular crystalline structure required for classification as a true mineral.
Geologists therefore commonly describe obsidian as a natural glass or mineraloid.
Why Is Most Obsidian Black?
The classic black appearance of obsidian results from its composition and the way light interacts with the material.
Even relatively small amounts of iron and other elements or microscopic inclusions can contribute to its dark appearance. In thin sections or around very fine edges, some black obsidian may appear somewhat translucent, revealing brownish or other subtle undertones when strong light passes through it.
Not all obsidian, however, looks uniformly black.
Variations in inclusions, bubbles, flow structures, and other features created as the volcanic glass forms can produce some of obsidian's most recognizable varieties.
Black, Gold Sheen, Snowflake and Other Types of Obsidian
Black obsidian has a deep, usually uniform dark appearance and a characteristic glassy luster. It is one of the varieties most frequently fashioned into polished beads, carvings, cabochons, and decorative objects.
Gold sheen obsidian displays a golden reflective effect that appears to move across the surface as the stone changes angle. Microscopic structures within the volcanic glass interact with light to produce this optical appearance.
Silver sheen obsidian produces a similar phenomenon but with silvery or gray reflections.
Snowflake obsidian is immediately recognizable because pale gray or whitish patterns appear throughout the dark volcanic glass. These "snowflakes" are crystalline aggregates, commonly associated with cristobalite, that developed within the glass.
Mahogany obsidian typically combines dark areas with reddish-brown or mahogany-colored patterns related to iron-bearing material.
There are other trade names for unusual-looking obsidians, but names alone should never be treated as proof of natural origin. This becomes especially important with vividly colored materials marketed using the word "obsidian.
How Hard Is Obsidian?
Obsidian generally falls around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, although reported values can vary somewhat with the material.
That makes it softer than quartz and many gemstones commonly used in jewelry.
But hardness tells only part of the story.
One of obsidian's defining physical characteristics is conchoidal fracture. When broken, it can produce smooth, curved fracture surfaces and extremely sharp edges. This characteristic explains why obsidian was historically used for blades, arrowheads, cutting implements, and other tools.
It also means finished obsidian jewelry should be protected from strong impacts. A polished bead may resist normal handling perfectly well, but a significant blow against a hard surface can chip or fracture it.
Obsidian Throughout Human History
Few gemstone materials connect geology and human history quite as clearly as obsidian.
Because fractured obsidian can produce exceptionally sharp edges, ancient communities used it to manufacture cutting tools, projectile points, blades, and ceremonial objects. Archaeologists have also studied obsidian artifacts to understand ancient trade networks because material from different volcanic sources can sometimes be chemically characterized and traced back to particular regions.
Deposits occur in volcanically active or formerly volcanic regions around the world, including parts of the United States, Mexico, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Armenia, Turkey, and other areas.
Its use therefore extends far beyond modern gemstone jewelry.
Obsidian in Jewelry and Gemstone Beads
Today, lapidaries polish obsidian into beads, cabochons, spheres, pendants, carvings, and other decorative forms.
Polished round black obsidian beads create a clean, highly reflective appearance that works particularly well in bracelets and necklaces. Gold sheen varieties introduce an optical effect that becomes more visible as jewelry moves under changing light.
Obsidian can also provide strong contrast when paired with lighter natural gemstone beads. Clear quartz, moonstone, pearls, and lighter-colored stones can create dramatic combinations, while sterling silver provides a cool metallic contrast against polished black material.
Because obsidian can chip, jewelry design should take its physical properties into consideration, particularly in rings and bracelets that are likely to receive more everyday contact.
How Should Obsidian Be Cared For?
Obsidian is relatively straightforward to maintain, but its glass-like nature means it should be handled thoughtfully.
For routine cleaning, use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and mild soap when necessary. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could affect the polished surface.
Store obsidian separately from harder gemstones that may scratch it. Pieces should also be protected from strong impacts that could chip an edge or cause a fracture.
These precautions are particularly important for carved pieces, faceted beads, and jewelry with exposed corners or thin sections.
More Than Just a Black Stone
At first glance, obsidian can appear deceptively simple: a glossy black stone created by volcanic activity. Look more closely, however, and it becomes a fascinating record of geological processes.
Its lack of a conventional crystal structure, rapid volcanic formation, conchoidal fracture, optical sheen, natural inclusions, and long relationship with human civilization distinguish it from most materials commonly encountered in gemstone jewelry.
Understanding those characteristics also provides the foundation for answering a more difficult question.
