What Is Sapphire?
What is sapphire? Sapphire is a gem variety of corundum, a crystalline aluminum oxide mineral with the chemical formula Al₂O₃. Although sapphire is most famous for its rich blue color, natural sapphires actually occur in an extraordinary range of colors, including pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, violet, and even colorless.
There is one important exception: gem-quality red corundum is classified as ruby rather than sapphire.
This means ruby and sapphire belong to the same mineral species. Their different names and colors result largely from trace elements present within the crystal as it develops.
Sapphire's combination of remarkable color, excellent durability, and fascinating natural inclusions has made it one of the world's most important gemstones for jewelry, collecting, and gemological study.
How Does Sapphire Form?
Natural sapphire develops under geological conditions that allow aluminum-rich corundum crystals to form while relatively little silica is present.
Sapphires can occur in several geological environments, including certain metamorphic and igneous rocks. Over geological time, weathering can also release durable sapphire crystals from their original host rock. Rivers and streams may then transport and concentrate them in secondary deposits known as alluvial deposits.
Because corundum is exceptionally resistant to weathering, sapphire crystals can survive this journey better than many surrounding minerals.
The geological environment also influences the trace elements and inclusions that become incorporated into the growing crystal—and those tiny differences can dramatically affect a sapphire's final appearance.
Why Is Sapphire Blue?
Pure corundum is essentially colorless. Sapphire receives its colors from trace elements and interactions within its crystal structure.
In blue sapphire, iron and titanium play an important role in producing the characteristic blue color.
But sapphire doesn't stop at blue.
Different trace elements and combinations can produce pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, and violet sapphires. Gemstones in these non-blue colors are commonly referred to as fancy sapphires.
This is why two gemstones with completely different appearances can still belong to exactly the same mineral species.
Sapphire Comes in More Colors Than Blue
Blue may be sapphire's signature color, but the wider sapphire family is remarkably diverse.
Pink sapphire ranges from delicate pale pink to intense saturated shades.
Yellow sapphire can range from light yellow to deeper golden and orangy-yellow tones.
Green sapphire varies from softer grayish greens to more saturated green colors.
Purple and violet sapphires introduce cooler combinations that can sometimes resemble other purple gemstones at first glance.
Colorless sapphire, sometimes called white sapphire in the trade, is corundum with little color-producing influence.
One of the most celebrated fancy varieties is padparadscha sapphire, traditionally associated with a distinctive pinkish-orange to orange-pink appearance.
There are even color-change sapphires, which can appear noticeably different under different types of lighting.
Understanding this color range is important because a sapphire does not need to be blue to be genuine.
What Makes Star Sapphire Different?
Some sapphires contain extremely fine needle-like inclusions, commonly associated with rutile, sometimes referred to by gemologists as silk.
When these inclusions are oriented appropriately and the gemstone is cut into a domed cabochon, light can reflect from them to produce a star-like optical phenomenon known as asterism.
The resulting stone is called a star sapphire.
A well-defined star appears to move across the gemstone as either the stone or the light source changes position. Six-rayed stars are particularly familiar, although other ray patterns can occur.
In this case, inclusions that might reduce the desirability of another transparent gemstone are responsible for creating the feature that makes the sapphire special.
How Hard Is Sapphire?
Sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, placing it immediately below diamond in the traditional hardness ranking.
This exceptional scratch resistance is one reason sapphire works so well in jewelry intended for frequent wear.
It also has excellent toughness and no cleavage, giving it a particularly useful combination of physical properties for rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry.
However, hardness should not be confused with being indestructible. A sapphire can still chip or fracture if subjected to a sufficiently strong impact, particularly around exposed edges or areas containing significant fractures.
Proper jewelry design and thoughtful care remain important even with such a durable gemstone.
Where Do Natural Sapphires Come From?
Sapphire deposits occur in several regions around the world.
Historically important sources include Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Kashmir, while significant sapphires have also come from countries including Madagascar, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Tanzania, and the United States.
Different localities can become associated with certain colors or visual characteristics, but geographic origin should not be determined from appearance alone.
Two sapphires from different countries can look remarkably similar, while sapphires from the same deposit can vary considerably.
For important gemstones where geographic origin affects rarity or value, specialized gemological laboratory analysis may be necessary.
Are Natural Sapphires Always Untreated?
No—and this is one of the most important things to understand about sapphire.
Heat treatment has long been used to improve the color or clarity of sapphire and is widely encountered within the gemstone market.
Other treatments also exist, including lattice diffusion, in which heat and added elements are used to alter color. Certain sapphires may also receive fracture or cavity filling, and other treatments can occur.
Treatment does not automatically mean that a sapphire is undesirable, but the type of treatment can significantly affect rarity, value, identification, and sometimes care.
An untreated sapphire, a conventionally heat-treated sapphire, and a diffusion-treated sapphire should therefore not automatically be considered equivalent simply because they have similar color.

Sapphire in Jewelry and Gemstone Beads
Sapphire's durability makes it suitable for an enormous variety of jewelry.
Transparent material is frequently faceted for rings, earrings, and pendants, while included or phenomenal material may be fashioned into cabochons. Sapphire can also be cut and polished into gemstone beads for bracelets and necklaces.
Faceted sapphire beads can emphasize flashes of light and variations in color, while polished beads create a smoother appearance that allows the gemstone's natural tones and inclusions to become more prominent.
Sapphire also pairs naturally with sterling silver, gold, pearls, clear quartz, moonstone, and other gemstones, giving jewelry designers considerable flexibility.
How Should Sapphire Be Cared For?
For most natural untreated or traditionally heat-treated sapphires, warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush are appropriate for routine cleaning.
Because sapphire is very hard, it should also be stored thoughtfully. A loose sapphire can scratch many softer gemstones, while diamonds can scratch sapphire.
Extra caution is required when the treatment history is unknown. Fracture-filled, cavity-filled, or dyed sapphires may require gentler cleaning than untreated material.
Knowing what you own is therefore an important part of proper gemstone care.
More Than the Classic Blue Gemstone
Sapphire is far more complex than its familiar blue image suggests.
It belongs to the same mineral species as ruby, occurs naturally in an extensive range of colors, can contain inclusions that produce spectacular star effects, and possesses the durability necessary for generations of jewelry wear.
But sapphire's popularity has also encouraged the development of laboratory-grown material and numerous treatment methods.
